One of the most devastating parts of football is when a team's starting quarterback gets injured. This season, we have seen a lot of that, with 8 quarterbacks that were not listed as the #1 QB on the depth chart before the season starting in week 3. Today, we will be taking a deeper dive into how each of them have been performing, and whether or not their success is sustainable.
Gardner Minshew, Jaguars
Filling in for Nick Foles, who went down with a broken clavicle in week One, Minshew has played well. He led Jacksonville to a victory in his first home start, and led a game winning drive against the Texans only to lose on a two point conversion fail. The Mustached QB has certainly showed some flashes, and with a pretty easy schedule, Duval could find themselves in playoff competition.
Kyle Allen, Panthers
Allen was given the start after Cam Newton's foot injury this week, and he played very well, throwing for over 250 yards and four touchdowns while leading his team to victory. Newton was again ruled out for week four, so Allen will have a chance to prove that this game was not just a fluke. For now, it looks like Allen will be a solid backup if Newton misses any more time, but anything more remains to be determined.
Jacoby Brissett, Colts
Thrust into the starting QB role after Andrew Luck's abrupt retirement this August, Brissett has played quite well. The Colts currently sit at 2-1, and lost their only game in overtime to the Chargers in week one, Last week, Brissett led Indy to a victory over a stacked Falcons team, and threw for over 300 yards. Brissett is one of the best backups in the league, and is certainly talented enough to keep Indianapolis in the playoff picture for the rest of the year.
Teddy Bridgewater, Saints
Following Drew Brees' hand injury, Bridgewater was put into the role as starting quarterback. After disappointing in relief efforts against a great Rams team, he played very well against Seattle this week, posting a 112.3 passer rating and tossing two touchdowns, Bridgewater, who is the highest paid backup in the league, likely has the skill and talent to lead New Orleans without Brees, and especially in a weak division, keep them in playoff competition until Brees comes back.
Mason Rudolph, Steelers
Rudolph beat out former backup Joshua Dobbs in the offseason for the #2 QB job, and when Ben Roethlisberger went down with a shoulder injury, his name was called. Rudolph has lost two very close games, but still played well in them, throwing for a combined 286 yards. However, he has not shown the talent needed to take Pittsburgh over the top, and it looks like the Steelers will be in for another disappointing year this season.
Luke Falk, Jets
Falk, who was the third string quarterback at the start of the season, now is the starter until Sam Darnold recovers from his mononucleosis. Falk has easily played the worst out of these backups, although it is not really his fault. He was awful in relief efforts against the Browns in week 2, and even worse against the Patriots this week. He struggled to lead the Jets into the red zone, and threw errant passes. The Jets should be eagerly waiting Darnold's expected return in week 5.
Josh Rosen, Dolphins
Rosen is unlike the rest of these quarterbacks. He was not put in for injury relief, but rather as a backup due to poor play from the starter(Ryan Fitzpatrick). Rosen is now the leader of the tankers, and has put up an astounding 13 points in the last three weeks. His situation has gone from bad(Arizona) to worse(Miami), and he cannot be blamed for the Doplhins' poor play. The talent around him is very bad, and his good plays are put to waste. Maybe he will get traded to a better situation if the Dolphins land Tua Tagovailoa in the upcoming draft.
Daniel Jones, Giants
Jones, who was laughed, booed, and clowned at after being taken with the #6 overall pick of the draft, silenced all of the haters yesterday, leading the Giants to a victory and overcoming a 28-10 deficit without Saquon Barkley. He played out of his mind, tossing two touchdowns and running for two more, including the game winner with under two minutes left. If DannyDimes is for real, then Giants fans have something special to look forward to.
