Defense Wins Championships

To start off the season, the Patriots defense and special teams has been insanely good. In fact, they might be the MVP for fantasy football teams around the country this season, and today, we will be breaking down exactly why and how they are so good.

First, let's start with the defensive line. Led by a rejuvenated Jamie Collins, the front seven has been next level this year. Under new defensive line coordinator Bret Bielma, they have already amassed 25 sacks this year. If they continue on this pace, they will have defeated the 1984-85 Bears for most sacks in a season. That team, dubbed "The Monsters of the Midway", are widely regarded as one of the best defenses in football. Collins already has three picks, 30 tackles, and 4.5 sacks, and other members have chipped in a lot too. Rookie Chase Winovich scored his first touchdown on Thursday, and Kyle Van Noy also notched a fumble return touchdown.

Now, we will move on to the secondary. Anchored by Stephon Gilmore, arguably the best cornerback in the game right now, the Pats secondary has shut down all opponents. Gilmore has continued his superstar level play, slot corner Jonathon Jones has taken major strides and looks to be in his role for the for-seeable future. Both of the McCourty twins have been outstanding, as has JC Jackson.

Finally, the special teams has played very, very, well this year. They have already blocked two punts and returned both for touchdowns. New punt returner Gunner Olszewski has also played very well in his role, despite muffing a punt during the third game of the season.

While we must take into effect the fact that the Pats have not played anybody credible yet, their defense and special teams has still been outstanding. Perhaps one reason for their dominance is that for the first time in a very long time, Bill Belichick is calling the defensive plays rather than the defensive coordinator. Whatever it is, the Patriots should not stop as they are the clear Super Bowl favorites right now, mostly because of their defense.
