Free Agency Recap

The 2019-2020 NFL season is under way. After about a month of a break from the league, it is back. In the past few weeks, teams have agreed to deals with all the big name free agents, but haven't been able to sign them yet. Today, we will be taking a look at the biggest deals that had the most impact and grading them.

Le'Veon Bell signs with the New York Jets

Le'Veon Bell bet on himself. He lost badly. Last offseason, Bell declined the 14.5 million dollar franchise tag the Steelers gave him and opted to sit out the regular season. His intention was to become a free agent this year and earn money north of 15 million. He even declined the 4 year, 70 million dollar deal Pittsburgh offered him. He just signed a 4 year, 53 million dollar deal that only pays him about 13 million a year. Instead of getting record breaking money, no team took a big chance and signed him to what is likely the standard for running backs now.

CJ Mosley also goes to the Jets

For some reason, the Ravens decided not to resign their star linebacker who has made the Pro Bowl in four of his five seasons. This deal doesn't really make sense for the Jets, and Mosley would have been better off in Baltimore. The Jets' strongest position was probably linebacker, with Avery Williamson and Darron Lee stepping up. It does not seem sensible to give Mosley 17 million a year and put either Williamson or Lee in an unfamiliar spot. The Jets would have been better off addressing a more pressing need, like wide receiver.

The Jaguars land Nick Foles

This move was expected and Foles has been linked to Jacksonville for a long time. Offensive Coordinator John DeFilippo was Foles' QB coach in Philly, and the two sides seem like a good fit. However, once you dig deep, problems start to appear. Firstly, the Jaguars are very intent on running the football ad pounding the rock. Foles game style is opposite of that, and he played in an Air Raid system in college. Also, the jaguars are giving Foels 50 million in guarantees along with 22 million a year. The Jaguars might have been better off drafting Kyler Murray or Dwayne Haskins and passing on Foles.

Trey Flowers joins the Lions

Flowers and the Lions are a good fit. Head coach Matt Patricia was Flowers' DC in New England, and GM Bob Quinn also has ties to the Patriots. However, this deal is perplexing when looking at the money side of it. Flowers has amassed just 21 sacks in the last three years. While he is good, he is not 18 million per year good. Flowers was a bit overhyped and is being paid like a superstar, even though he needs a breakout season to become one.

Trent Brown goes to Oakland

The largest player in the NFL signed the largest contract for an offensive lineman. Much like the Flowers deal, this deal is questionable. Before arriving in New England, Brown was a right tackle that many did not know of.After being traded and converted to left tackle, Brown thrived protecting Tom Brady's blindside. He know is the highest paid lineman ever. Brown is certainly good, but is not great. He is mostly unproven and the Raiders don't even need offensive tackles.
