Madrid's £300m Transfer Budget: Endless Possibilities for Summer

Nakul Joshi

Recently, Real Madrid has been undergoing a crisis since the past few months. Their loss against Ajax and elimination from the Champions League became a symbol in the descent of their performance besides making many of their faults apparent. In efforts to fix their problems, Real Madrid hired Zinedine Zidane as the new manager of Madrid.

However, at first, the Spanish team was unable to convince the Madrid veteran to return as a manager. As a result, in order to assure Zidane’s homecoming, Madrid has supposedly granted him £300m in transfer budget to get the team back on its feet, and with this large sum of money, the possibilities are endless once the transfer window re-opens this summer.

To start off, Madrid stars such as Bale, Courtois and, even the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, Luka Modric are anticipated to leave in order to make room for others. Compared to last year, when Bale scored 16 goals in 26 games, his performance has been lacking having scored half as much this year in 23 matches played. The inferiority of his shooting ability explains the scarcity of Madrid's goals in their games. To add on, Modric is unable to connect the offense's passes as they try to attack making their attacks weaker.

These seemingly indispensable players are rumored to be replaced by the likes of Kylian M’bappe, Neymar Jr, Eden Hazard, and Christian Eriksen. M'bappe, if added to the team, would fix Madrid's lack of finishing power and may get them to score more goals again. Furthermore, the young french national could also add speed to Madrid's plays giving them an edge in their attacks.

If Neymar were to be paired with M'bappe, the duo could easily be able to fix Madrid's crisis. Having already played together, Neymar's dribbling and passing skills paired with M'bappe's skills would make a force to look out for, and they have proved so with PSG. Eden Hazard would also make a great addition to the team. Being at the peak of his performance from the past few years, Hazard would also upgrade Madrid's offense with his shooting ability.

Moreover, Christian Eriksen could serve as a replacement for Modric. With his arguably superior passing and playmaking skills could give Madrid's offense many more chances to get the ball in the net. As can be seen, Madrid is looking to better their offense, which had shown its incompetence in previous matches, and obtaining these people would no doubt do so. Adding speed and offensive play to their forward line might be the key to netting more goals, and with these players, this would be made possible.

The only problem is, these are four very expensive players, and with £300m they could still only acquire two of these players, and maybe even only one. However, any of these attackers paired with Vinícius Júnior and Karim Benzema would make a formidable back line. The improvement needs to be in the midfield, so the most optimal acquirements would be M'bappe and Hazard. To further open their spending budget, a major change they could make would be selling Courtois. He has not performed anything like his superior World Cup performance, while on the other hand, Keylor Navas, in his limited appearances, has done admirably.

As Zinedine Zidane envisions changes in the near future, the players of Los Blancos can only brace for the ushering of what will hopefully be a new age for Madrid.
