The Real Madrid Crisis...again

Nakul Joshi

In the previous Real Madrid article, the various factors such as incompetent strikers that led to their loss against Ajax in the Champions League Round of 16 were discussed. Their relatively early finish in the Champions League this year, compared to their triumph last year, displays the deterioration in the quality of their performance. However, with a few more changes in their roster as well as other conflicts, Real Madrid’s performance will go from bad to worse.

One of these these changes is the confirmed transfer of the Real Madrid left-back Marcelo Vieira. The Serie A club Juventus is confirmed to have agreed on terms for the 30-year-old’s transfer. Having lost his place on the squad to Sergio Reguilon, Marcelo is eager on a move and has even consulted CEO Jose Angel Sanchez about leaving the club due to the scarcity of his play time. Marcelo has contributed a great deal to Madrid and their past accomplishments throughout his several years with the club. His loss may prove to have a greater impact than first thought. On the other hand, this may make Juventus’s squad stronger as familiar faces play on the same field once again. Marcelo was benched by Solari, and could have been an improvement to the team if utilized by a competent coach.

Madrid’s struggle not only in the Champions League but catching up to their rivals Barcelona in the La Liga, has made business between the team more intense and has brewed up conflict. Right after their loss against Ajax the team, as well as club president Florentino Perez, had a brief argument during which he described their performance as “shameful.” As the argument heightened, Perez even threatened to sack Sergio Ramos.

However, these problems may change if Jose Mourinho is appointed the position of manager until the end of this season, taking the place of Santiago Solari. Solari ran the show for one of the worst Champions league season Madrid has ever been the victim to. Mourinho, who was sacked from Manchester United in December, is looking to fix the point at issue. Nonetheless, a new manager, especially Mourinho, may have a negative consequence for Madrid. One reason for Mourinho’s sacking was the conflict between him and his players, exclusively Paul Pogba. However, the main reason for his firing was probably Manchester United's terrible performance. However, former striker Ole is back and Manchester United are firing. If his attitude and bad luck were to carry on to Real Madrid, it has the potential to make this situation even worse.

As their Champion League defeat, a loss of a player, and inner conflicts in the club take place, things aren’t looking up for Real Madrid. This may spell the end of a golden age for the . Madrid Dynasty after enjoying three consecutive Champion League wins and many other achievements.
